This is arguably the most beloved Taiwanese dish there is, made even better with ground bison! Literally ‘stewed meat rice,’ Lo Rou Fan is a classic comfort dish consisting of braised meat in a flavourful broth, served with rice, eggs, and blanched greens. Based on its similarities with that Italian meat sauce, this dish is often referred to as ‘Taiwanese Ragu.’

Directions

  • Heat a skillet over medium high heat, and add the onions. Cook for 6-8 minutes before adding the bison, garlic and shiitake mushrooms. Cook for another 5-6 minutes before adding remaining ingredients.
  • Put a lid on the skillet, and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Reduce the heat, and allow to simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the lid, turn the heat to medium high, and reduce until most of the water has evaporated – about 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve immediately with rice, steamed bok choy and chili oil.
